Slide 42: Protolanguage: Microfunctions (Inner Dimension As Types Of Modality)

And because cognition and desideration can stand for modalities (Halliday & Matthiessen 1999: 143-4), we can also interpret the inner contrast as a contrast between modalisation (‘the way things are’) and modulation (‘the way things should be’).

From this interpersonal, rather than ideational, perspective,
the interactional microfunction involves usuality/probability — the space between ‘is’ and ‘isn’t’ — with regard to me-&-you,
the personal microfunction involves usuality/probability — the space between ‘is’ and ‘isn’t’ — with regard to it,
the regulatory microfunction involves inclination/obligation — the space between ‘do’ and ‘don’t’ — with regard to me-&-you and
the instrumental microfunction involves inclination/obligation — the space between ‘do’ and ‘don’t’ — with regard to it.

We will return to this perspective towards the end of part 2.
