Indeed, what is now
being explored under the banner of complexity science — emergent properties and
the like — can be understood as bringing relationalism into the materialist
picture. And semiosis, in its broadest sense of ‘semiotic being’, and which includes both sensing and saying — that
is: consciousness — can be
understood as one thread in the
relationalist yarn: the thread whose core is symbolic identity.
